Is the Samsung GT-i9260 the Galaxy Nexus II, Galaxy Premier or both?

The closer we get to the one year anniversary of the Galaxy Nexus unveiling, the stranger a complete lack of future Nexus leaks become. We’ve certainly heard a couple rumors, but by this time last year, the blogosphere was lighting up non-stop with Nexus news. Today, even with the appearance of a user agent profile for the Samsung GT-i9260, we’re still left wondering if we know anything about the next Nexus at all. Thanks to our sources : AndroidAndMe
The first time we heard of the GT-i9260, it was attached to small spec-sheet under the name “Nexus.” Compared against the lesser Galaxy Nexus and incredibly similar Galaxy S III, the i9260 was rumored as having a 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 dual-core processor, 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display, 16GB of expandable memory, an 8-megapixel camera and 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera.
This past weekend, Pocketnow got their hands on a user agent profile for the i9260. According to the UAProf, the i9260 has a 1280×720 display, and an ARM11 CPU. While the display resolution makes sense, the CPU does not. The ARM11 dates back to the HTC Dream, otherwise known as the G1. So there’s absolutely no way the i9260 will come with an ARM11 CPU. Pocketnow suggests that ARM11 could refer to Cortex-A11, but according to ARM’s own website, there is no Cortex-A11. ARM went straight from Cortex-A9, to Cortex-A15. The only reasonable assumption then is that ARM11 was only listed under the cpu as a placeholder.
Essentially, the UAProf on the i9260 tells us nothing. There has, however, been one other leak between the original i9260 spec-sheet showing up online and yesterday’s UAProf for the device.
Back in August, SamMobile, who has a good reputation for nailing down Samsung rumors, posted a complete spec list for the i9260 under the name “Galaxy Premiere.” According to SamMobile, the i9260 will come with a 4.65-inch HD display, an 8-megapixel camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and a minimum of 8GB of storage, which can be expanded via microSD. The Galaxy Premiere lines up well with the original i9260 Nexus leak, except on one front. The Galaxy Premiere is rumored to launch with a Qualcomm MSM7227A, a 1GHz single-core Cortex-A5. Plenty of manufacturers are still using the MSM7227A, but it’s a weaker, low-end Snapdragon S1 chip. Not what you would expect to find in the Galaxy Nexus II.
Confused? Here’s how it breaks down:
Original i9260 “Nexus” leak
  • 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 16GB expandable storage
Galaxy Premiere i9260 leak
  • 4.65-inch HD display
  • MSM7227A 1-GHz single-core Cortex-A5 processor
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 8 GB/16 GB expandable storage
At this point, it’s safe to say the Samsung GT-i9260 exists. And it make sense for that model number to be assigned to the Galaxy Nexus II, since the first Galaxy Nexus was the GT-i9250, but it might not be.
To answer the title question of this post, I guess both would be the closest answer I can come up with. I think the spec sheets for both the original “Nexus” leak and Galaxy Premiere could very well be correct, but one was attached to the wrong model number. Samsung pumps out similar devices all the time. They might change one thing between two handsets, like the processor, and introduce them at different prices under different names.
I could definitely see the Galaxy Nexus II releasing under these specs. Samsung has just improved the subpixel layout of their SAMOLED HD displays, so even at the same size it could still be an upgrade, and the Cortex-A9 series of processors still have a lot of life left in them. Plus not jumping on the Cortex-A15 bandwagon right this minute would keep unlocked devices cheap, while still giving Samsung and Google a chance to play around with hardware design.
We’ll be on the lookout for more information on the Galaxy Nexus II, Galaxy Premier and GT-i9260. For now, hopefully this clears up a little bit of the confusion surrounding the devices.
